What is Preschool
The Preschool program is a state funded program designed to help preschool children who are at risk of beginning school behind their classmates.
The program is for four year old children who are economically disadvantaged or experiencing a developmental and speech delay or for three year old children who are experiencing a developmental of speech delay.
Preschool students attend a four day a week program, Monday - Thursday. Preschool will follow the normal school calendar for the district, however; Preschool typically starts later.
Preschool Teachers have teaching degrees and specialize in working with children during this time of early learning. Preschool offers Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy to those that qualify.
The Preschool Program
- Preschool services for eligible children at no cost to the parent
- Partnerships with parents through parent involvement
- Developmental, speech, hearing and vision screenings
- Focus on the physical, social, emotional and intellectual development of the whole child
- Provide opportunities to learn through exploration
- Certified teacher and instructional assistant in each classroom
Needed Items
- Birth Certificate
- Gather medical information
- Complete a vision examination
- Medicaid card (if applicable)
- Immunization records
Transition Tips
- Visit the program with your child
- Arrange a visit from your child's teacher
- Ask about bringing a comfort item from home (stuffed toy or blanket)
- Find ways to communicate with teachers and staff (notebook, agenda, progress notes, home visits)
- Ask about transportation
- Participate in all meetings and contribute to the development of the Individualized Education Program (IEP)
IFSP to IEP
- Transition conference to facilitate the development of the transition plan
- Referral to the school district for special education and related services
- Evaluations completed and eligibility determined by the Admissions and Release Committee (ARC)
- ARC will develop and IEP, if your child is eligible
- IEP is the educational plan for your child
